The story behind Tartan Couch
The name “Tartan Couch” is inspired by my late granny, Sheena.
Hi, my name is Nate, and I was born and raised on the west coast of Scotland. My family originated from Egypt, and my father moved to the UK in 1977. He attended university in England before moving to Scotland in 1986.
There, he met Sheena through a mutual friend and boarded at her home. Over time, she adopted the motherly role in his life, becoming a second mother to him.
In 1992, my parents married in Egypt, with Sheena in attendance. Her motherly role then extended to both of my parents, and later she became a grandmother to my brother and me.
Growing up, I would often spend time with my granny, sitting on the couch and painting watercolours. This became a ritual throughout my childhood: watercolours and canned macaroni cheese.
She often encouraged me to consider attending art school. However, as things turned out, I ended up studying Ethical Hacking & Cybersecurity at university. Despite finding myself in a completely different field, my passion for design and creativity has always been part of my personal life and outlook. Later, it also changed the way I approached my work in tech.
I believe there is creativity in everything, including places where you might not expect it to be found. Whether it’s painting, the language used to communicate a desired website design, or the puzzle of building automated solutions to make a business owner’s life easier, I enjoy the creativity in it all.
And now, getting to sit on that couch with someone, share ideas, and create something together is what I want Tartan Couch to be about.
